Magnesium is the wall of the supplement aisle where the numbers look most alike and mean the least. One bottle says 500 mg, the next says 200 mg, a third says “high absorption” and no number at all. We read 600 dedicated magnesium products from the NIH’s public label database to sort out what those numbers actually say.
Two things we expected didn’t survive contact with the data. One thing the first half of the data hid, the second half revealed — more on that in the methods, because it changed a conclusion.
More than a third exceed the NIH upper limit in a single serving
The National Institutes of Health sets a reference ceiling for magnesium from supplements — in their words, “The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg for adults.” (NIH ODS fact sheet) The limit exists mostly because of one well-documented and unglamorous effect: past that point, unabsorbed magnesium tends to end the evening in the bathroom.
On the shelf, per serving:
- The median dedicated magnesium product delivers 250 mg elemental per serving.
- 37.2% — 217 of 584 — exceed 350 mg in a single serving.
- 15.1% exceed 420 mg — more than the entire daily recommended intake for an adult man, food included.
- The largest verified single serving: 800 mg — more than twice the supplemental ceiling, and we found four products at that mark.
This is not a compliance question — the UL is guidance, not law, and a label may exceed it freely. But it means a large slice of the shelf treats more milligrams as the selling point, on the one mineral where the reference ceiling is lower than many bottles’ serving size.

What form is the shelf actually selling?
If you read supplement forums, you’d expect the answer to be oxide — the cheap form everyone warns about. That’s the first expectation the data killed:
- Citrate is the most-named form, on 38% of labels.
- Oxide is second at 22%, glycinate/bisglycinate third at 15%, malate at 10%.
- 26.3% of products never name a form at all — not on the front, not in the panel.
So the “shelf is all oxide” story doesn’t hold. But oxide left a fingerprint somewhere else: dose. Among products naming a single form, pure-oxide products carry a median of 300 mg and 49% of them sit above the UL — against a 245 mg median for pure glycinate (34% above) and 217 mg for pure citrate (31% above). Oxide is the cheapest way to print a big number, and the big numbers skew toward oxide. The headline milligrams and the bargain form travel together.
And the quarter of the shelf that names no form is selling a number that can’t be interpreted — the same gap we found when 71% of ashwagandha labels wouldn’t state their standardization. A milligram figure without the form is a price tag without a currency. We’ve written about what the forms actually differ in separately.
The famous label trick is real — and it clusters in one corner of the market
There’s a well-known warning about magnesium: the front of the bottle says “1,500 mg magnesium taurate”, but that’s the weight of the whole compound — the elemental magnesium inside is a fraction of it. We came to count how common that actually is on physical labels.
162 products in our sample carry a magnesium number in the product’s own name. 85% match the elemental amount in the Supplement Facts panel. Fifteen labels — 9% — inflate the front number by 1.8× or more. The worst: a “Magnesium Taurate 1,500 mg” delivering 120 mg elemental — a 12.5-fold gap. A “Citrate 3,500 mg” delivering 400. A branded L-threonate titled 667 mg delivering 147.
Two patterns inside those fifteen are worth naming. First, eight of the fifteen come from just two online-first bulk brands — the kind that live on marketplace listings rather than store shelves. The compound-weight habit appears to be a creature of e-commerce, now printed onto the labels themselves. Second, a couple are calcium-magnesium combos where the front number may refer to the whole mineral complex — we counted them as inflated but flag the ambiguity.
Separately, seven products state only the compound weight and no elemental amount anywhere we could read — including one heavily marketed seven-form blend. For those, the number on the label cannot be converted into the number your body gets without the manufacturer’s help.
One more data point for the dilution effect
Last week we showed that an ingredient’s dose collapses when it joins a multi-ingredient formula. Magnesium repeats the pattern: median 250 mg in dedicated products, median 100 mg once it appears inside a sleep formula — a 2.5-fold drop, from the same shelf, often from the same brands.
Where we stand, and what this count can’t see
Disclosure first, as always: our own formula uses magnesium bisglycinate, so the form findings above touch our product directly. Weigh accordingly.
The limits:
- We counted per serving. A 400 mg product taken as two servings of 200 is the user’s choice; the label’s stated serving is what we measured.
- The UL is not a danger line. It’s the intake NIH considers the ceiling for supplemental magnesium in healthy adults, driven mainly by digestive tolerance. Exceeding it on a label is legal and, for some people under medical guidance, intentional.
- Form detection reads the label text. A product listing several forms counts toward each; a “magnesium blend” that names nothing counts as unnamed.
- Sixteen labels gave no readable elemental dose (nine had no magnesium line we could parse, seven stated compound weight only) and are excluded from the dose statistics, kept in the form statistics.
How to read a magnesium label in ten seconds
- Find the elemental number in the Supplement Facts panel — the line with a %DV next to it. That one is regulated, and for 85% of number-titled products it agrees with the front. For the other 15%, the panel is the truth and the front is marketing.
- Check the form is named. A quarter of the shelf doesn’t. No form, no way to know what the number means for absorption or tolerance.
- Do the serving math against 350 mg — the NIH supplemental ceiling. More than a third of bottles cross it in one serving; that’s worth knowing before the bottle decides for you.
How we counted, so you can check us
We searched the DSLD for “magnesium”, took the 600 most relevant on-market products whose own name names magnesium — dedicated magnesium supplements, not multivitamins — and read all 600 full labels on 29 August 2026. The elemental dose is the magnesium line carrying a %DV in the Supplement Facts panel (579 labels), a plain elemental line without %DV (4), or an explicit “providing N mg elemental” note (1) — 584 readable in total. Magnesium stearate, an excipient, was excluded everywhere. The UL quote is verbatim from the NIH ODS fact sheet linked above.
A transparency note, because we’d rather over-report than under-report: the first version of this page, live for a few hours, was based on 398 labels — the database rate-limited our pull — and an earlier extraction step could mistake a compound-weight line for the elemental one, which briefly overstated the over-UL share as 41.5% and understated the front-label inflation. Completing all 600 labels and hand-checking every dose above 600 mg produced the numbers you see now. The missing 202 labels turned out to contain most of the compound-weight offenders — a reminder, at our own expense, that a truncated sample can hide exactly the tail you care about.
