Tracking Sleep With Oura or Whoop: What Deep Sleep and HRV Actually Tell You

You wake up, reach for your phone, and there it is: sleep score 68. Yesterday it was 84, and you did nothing differently. What your tracker actually measures

No wearable measures sleep directly. Sleep — the thing itself — is electrical activity in your brain, and measuring it properly takes a lab: electrodes on your scalp, a polysomnography rig, a technician. What your ring or band measures is everything around sleep: movement, heart rate, heart-rate variability, skin temperature, breathing rate. Then an algorithm infers what your brain was probably doing from what your body was doing.

That inference is genuinely good at some things and honestly shaky at others:

  • Very good: when you fell asleep, when you woke, how long you slept, how consistent your schedule is. This is most of what matters, and trackers nail it.
  • Decent: direction of travel over weeks — whether your nights are trending better or worse.
  • Shaky: the minute-by-minute breakdown of sleep stages on any single night. Wrist and finger signals simply don't carry enough information to stage sleep the way an EEG does, and validation studies consistently show stage-level agreement is the weakest part of every consumer device.

The deep-sleep number, specifically

This is the number men fixate on most — and it's the least reliable one on the screen. Two problems stack up. First, the measurement issue above: your device is estimating deep sleep from proxies, and it misclassifies stages regularly. Second, even if the number were perfect, deep sleep varies night to night for reasons that have nothing to do with anything you did — training load, a late meal, room temperature, plain biology.

So a single Tuesday showing 42 minutes of deep sleep tells you almost nothing. Twenty-one nights showing your average drifting up or down tells you something real. Use the number the way it deserves to be used: as a trend input, never as a nightly verdict.

HRV: useful, but not how most people use it

Heart-rate variability — the tiny variations in time between heartbeats — is a reasonable window into how loaded your nervous system is. Higher variability generally tracks with a system that's recovering; suppressed variability tracks with stress, illness, alcohol, or overreaching.

Two rules save this metric from being noise:

  • Never compare your HRV to anyone else's. Baseline HRV differs wildly between healthy people — a 45 and a 90 can both be fine. The only comparison that means anything is you-versus-your-own-baseline.
  • Watch responses, not readings. HRV is at its best as an experiment tool: two drinks at dinner, late heavy meal, stressful week — you'll usually see the dip. The score is a summary, not a target

Sleep scores and readiness scores are composites — duration, timing, stages, HRV, heart rate blended into one number by a formula the company chose. They're convenient. They're also where tracking goes wrong for a lot of men, because a score invites optimizing the score. You can't sleep harder by staring at the output. You can only change the inputs: when you stop working, what you drink, how bright your evening is, how warm your room runs, how loaded your stress system is when your head hits the pillow.
